Just Comment here and Earn $100 !

by Arun Prabhudesai on October 9, 2007

Yes thats true, you can earn $100 just by commenting on this blog.

In last 5 months Trak.in blog has grown reasonably in terms of traffic as well as subscribers and expected to touch 100,000 pageviews and close to 1000 subscribers. However, one aspect that I think is yet to catch up with traffic are comments and interactivity. Currently this blog averages about 3 comments (including my own) per post, which is not bad, but not good either.

In the quest to grow interaction and to know visitors perspective about my posts, I am hosting first contest on Trak.in called:

Comment and Earn Heading Small

Just comment on any of the nearly 240 posts published on Trak.in and you stand to win $100.It is that simple.

Some Points to remember:
  • The comment you write should be related to the subject of that post.
  • The comment should be at least 30 words or more. Generally, it is expected that comment not go beyond 100 words
  • You can have as many comment entries in the contest. The only limitation is one comment allowed per person per post.
  • All comments made between Oct 11th and Oct 25th will be considered for the prize winnings
  • Atleast 50 comments (of more than 30 words) should be received for contest to be Valid.
How the Winner will be chosen:
  • The quality of comment will be judged based on subject relativity, value & knowledge addition and unique perspective. I am not too worried about grammatical mistakes or cosmetic presentation of comment. What is important is the matter.
  • 10 comments will be shortlisted at the end of the contest. The winner will be chosen from these shortlisted comments.
  • These comments will be assessed by me and other group of people. I was actually planning to keep a public poll to choose the winner, but as is the case most of the times, public polls could be manipulated. If you have better ideas, let me know. I will be more than happy to consider it.
  • At the end of the contest I will put up a post giving reasons on why a particular comment was chosen as the winner.
  • If the number of entries are more than 100, I will have an additional prize that I will announce at a later date.
The Winnings:
  • The winner will receive $100 (or equivalent in Rupees based on exchange rate) via Bank transfer or PayPal.
  • Incase of a tie, the amount will distributed equally among winners

If you have any suggestions or ‘comments’, let me know. I would be more than happy to consider it.

As this is the first contest on Trak.in, I am not sure what to expect. However, if this is successful, I plan to do it every month going forward.

Best of Luck and may the best comment win :)

In order to spread the word regarding this contest, I will offer a linkback to every person who links to this post from his blog. You could use following line or anything else you want.

Trak.in is running a simple contest where you stand to earn $100 by just commenting on one of the many published posts.

To keep yourself updated on progress of this contest and to know further announcements, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or get the buzz via email.

Update: I have received couple of emails from readers saying they are having problems while commenting or their comments are not visible. If you are facing this problem too, please mail me at admin at trak dot in.

This seems to be a very nice strategy to attract more traffic as well as improve interaction with the readers. The only doubt in my mind is that how would you authenticate the winner and award him/her the prize money.

Sssh! Don’t let google know about your linkback strategy. They don’t really appreciate such barters ;-).

@googledegook, I did not understand your question.
Are you saying that authentication means if he or she is asking someone else to comment? or you are talking about the prize money giving part.
See, if a person is having a proxy to comment, again I am okay…because who ever will be actually commenting will also know about the competition…and for me the winner is the person who has the best comment in whatever way he has got it.
And as far as money giving goes…the user will have to give the correct email address..for the the comment to be eligible.
Also, I will be communication with the user for his bank details…paypal ID or check name etc..for awarding the money.

I am really nto sure if I understand your question, but I have tried to explain as much as I can…

Abhshekh, your point is taken. But I am not buying or selling links, I am asking readers to spread the word about this contest…

“I am not to(o) worried about grammatical mistakes” :)
I am assuming that (leaving a O) was on purpose! ;)

Good Luck with the contest.

Indian Blogger, thanks for pointing out.
That was a honest typo and not done on purpose :).

I got a suggestion, if you could have a Rich Text module enabled in comment. Just in case some reader comments pointing a URL, he would have a long line of letters blocking out the comments limitation? That could be hyperlinked?

Ashwin that is a good suggestion, let me see if there is a plugin available…

Broadband
There is widespread apathy towards  Broadband by home users as  costs are high.Unpredictable if based on downloads. service is at a sad discount. ISPs vying at each other offering sobs , lack of service motive etc are the restraints. In a way viewing a movie is  expensive . So many say why BB?
if we can manage without it ?

Just read this - sounds like a stupid strategy. Money won't drive higher interaction – not sustainably – and definitely not quality interaction. The best way to drive comments is to post debatable stories. Post your opinions strongly – bitch about people and startups. News stories are not comment worthy, but strong (and sometimes misguided) opinions are.

Here's some examples of posts that drove a lot of participation –

@Shobhit, that does sound like a plan :)

@Vikas, thanks for voicing your ‘blunt’ opinion. Offcourse posting debatable issues will drive interaction. I have no doubt about that and few of my previous ‘debatable’ or ‘opinionated’ posts do have generated quite a bit of interaction too.
If you read the post, the reason I started this contest was simple, get the people out of their comfort zone…It is a test to see what works to start getting people to interact….
The secondary reason is publicity. These kind of contest tend to get more publicity – We will wait and see if that is true.
It may sound stupid to you, but it seems to be working as the number of quality comments have gone up..:)

Yes, it does…but there are already 21 other comments that are in running…but you do stand a chance ;)

Man, Your contest is an interesting example for Freakonomics – a 100$ incentive for individuals to participate. Is it possible for you to share the stats of increase in responses after you set the $100 prize. I am looking here for two things a) Does money as a reward drive the internet market participation b) What kind of subjects invoke participation –cricket, bollywood, economy, personalities.  Have you observed any trend?

I would recommend you to use services like http://akismet.com/
for SPAM control in comments. Its really not a good idea to run a "post-a-comment" contest and then moderate the comments manually. As the first time commenter won't always take the pains of mailing you and ask to approve their comment.

Raja,
I do have Akismet. Unfortunately, last few days I have been having problems with real comments getting caught as spam. I am not sure why. Akisment has caught nearly 65000 spam comments till now with very good accuracy, however, last couple of weeks its been giving problems and it has unfortunately happening during this contest.
be rest assured that all the comments will appear on the blog and will be considered in the comment and earn contest. The only thing is it may take some time to appear.

Corruption in India and China:-
India and China are two competitors in IT and in many other fields. Most importantly in corruption ! Of late, the economic prosperity has fueled corruption to dizzy heights in both countries.Wonder whether there is competition here also!!
In India, corruption is a secret code in any office. A file is sent finally but the top political man puts
” not approved” Then knowing the code, the man gives a brief case of currency notes. The file is
amended “note approved”!!
The need of the hour is a total reformation from the top political brass down to the police constable, strict law enforcement, confiscation of property got by corruption, revamping education to the raising generation to teach the evils and the dangers of all forms of corruption to the health of the country. In fine to bring character and fair play in public life.
But all bold step should be from the top.

Dear Sir,

Pls ignore the people like Mr Raj. There are people in the world who always tend to act smart. The statistics is not the matter. Our viewers has increased considerably is the message. It is unfortunate that such knowledged people go beyond the expected support to the system.

We are getting really useful informations.

Keep it up.

Blogs-India

To be honest, blogs don’t really matter that much in India. The blogosphere hasn’t matured enough to have any real impact on Indian society. I’d like to imagine that most bloggers and blogsurfers are young urban folks. The sorts which make noises at times, but can never be a significant threat to the government. The government can do what it pretty much wants to do. If they don’t like it, bloggers can babble as much as they want to. Nobody cares.
