• Indian Telecom and Broadband numbers are picking up steam

    Indian telecom and broadband subscription numbers announced by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India recently show significant rise in their subscription base.

    For Indian telecom sector, the dream run started since last 5 years, during which time it registered more than 90% growth year on year. However, broadband subscribers have not increased as expected in past few years. This year however, it is picking up steam much to the delight of New age entrepreneurs who are banking on the growth of Indian internet subscriber base.

    There are innumerable surveys conducted by various agencies, however, these numbers can be regarded as most authentic as they come from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

    Here are some of the highlights of Indian Wireless and Wireline subscribers:

    • Wireless subscribers crosses 200 million mark
    • Teledensity reaches 21.20%.
    • Wireless subscribers are approximately 5 times of wireline subscribers
    • Total number of telephone subscribers has reached 241.02 million
    • At an average more than 8 million wireless subscribers are being added each month.

    Highlights of Indian Broadband (≥ 256 Kbps download) subscribers:

    • The current Broadband numbers stand at 2.56 million (August 2007)
    • Average of 90,000 subscribers are added each month. This number is growing rapidly in recent months.

    The total Internet subscribers in India currently stands at around 42 million. So, based on this survey roughly 6 percent of total internet subscribers have broadband in India.
