Selling Bollywood and online seems to be the new mantra in entertainment business. There has been a lot of activity around this sector recently. Now, Reliance on their site BigFlicks.com has started renting, selling and streaming movies online. The site is currently in alpha, but most of its feature seem to be functional.

BigFlicks plans to offer Bollywood and Regional movies, popular TV shows and Music videos available on a download-to-own or streaming basis, with an unlimited viewing period. The download / rental of movie will cost between 5 and 15 dollars, whereas streaming will be offered streaming free of cost. And if that is the case, I do not think they will have too many people spending money to buy or rent.

The big question is whether this model is going to be successful. I have earlier for online sales of Music. Why would an individual spend money on something that he is getting free of cost. Yes, I agree it is illegal, but no one really seems to care much about it.

BigFlicks has two other players who are in the same space as them – IndyaonDemand and . The success of these player depends on which of them is able to get exclusive tie-ups with Bollywood Production houses. With backing of Reliance, BigFlicks seems to be better placed. However, they have to ensure that the traffic on their site builds up. The more popular the site, the better chances they have to garner exclusive movie releases.

Based on current Alexa rankings Rajshri seems to be ahead by a large margin.

True. Who wants to spend $20 for a CD of 10 songs when only one of the song is worth listening to? That’s why iam so supportive of the online music websites (itunes) where we can buy the one song we like for 99 cents. The problem with the traditional music/movie companies is that they underestimate technology or maybe they have no idea of how technology works and how it can be used to increase viewership.

Anyway all this talk of copyright is a hogwash. How can the producer of a movie like ‘Partner’ ask us not to pirate when he himself has copied an english movie ‘Hitch’ without acknowledging or even paying any royalty to the original producers?

For me, “Copyright is the right to copy” :-D

    Well said Full2enjoy…
yep…and partner is just one movie like that…Majority of Bollywood movies fall in same category….”copying without giving credits”…
    and that’s a nice phrase…sums up perfectly…
