The jinxed entry of Starbucks in India

0

I had earlier written on how Starbuck is eager to brew coffee in India, but the latest news suggest that Starbucks is making some changes in their plan. They no more want to be in India, atleast temporarily. I guess Starbucks is jinxed when it plans to come to India. This has happened to them for the 2nd time. Last year they tried to make an entry, but Indian government rejected their application. Last month again they approached Indian government and submitted a new application. This time they have withdrew it themselves.

Here is the news that appeared in The Seattle Times:

Starbucks has decided to postpone its entry into India, which was scheduled for this year.

The Seattle coffee shop chain withdrew its application with the Indian government to operate stores there, but a spokesman said Starbucks is not abandoning plans to do business in India.

“We’re committed to having a presence in the market,” said Brandon Borrman. “This is just a temporary decision as we assess our options and make revisions.”

The company declined to say why it withdrew the application.

This spring, Starbucks revised its application for entry into India, according to The Hindu, an Indian newspaper. The chain’s initial application was rejected because of concerns about its India ownership structure, which was to be divided among Starbucks, an Indian retailer and Starbucks’ business partner in Indonesia, the report said.

I guess this is a really sad news for starbucks coffee lovers who are back in India. I am sure to miss it when I go back to India :(
