Offering access to Social networking sites free of cost is kind of becoming a norm with Indian Telecom Operators in recent times. Last month, Airtel and Reliance announced its tie-up with Facebook to provide free access to their mobile users. Aircel also recently announced its tie-up with popular messaging app Nimbuzz, which will allow their subscribers free usage.

Coming back to Reliance and Twitter Tie-up, this service is available only for prepaid GSM customers. Interested subscribers will have to send “SMS <ACT Twitter> to 53739” (Toll Free) to get the service activated.

Once the service is activated, users can starting using the free access services by visiting Twitter’s Mobile site or they can use it by downloading twitter application on their mobile phones.

Why Telecom Operators are offering such Free services?

All the data that will be consumed while sending and receiving tweets will be completely free of cost. However, if the subscribers accesses an external link from twitter that will be charged.

And that’s precisely why most telecom operators are starting to offer such free access services. More and more users start using these social platforms because they are free. But, more often than not their data usage from external sites shoots up thereby garnering more revenues to telecom operators.

Here is an example: If a video or a image is shared by someone on twitter, the actual twitter message will not be more than couple of kbs, however, the linked image or video which is being served from external url may run into megabytes, which is where Telecom operators make their moolah.

Reliance Free Twitter Access is available for limited time period and the last date to avail of the offer is 31st May 2013!
