(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 19, 2009 ) Boston, MA – Writing is an essential marketing tool for
small businesses and not-for-profit groups, but staff are often assigned these tasks with only the basics in hand. At the same time, they are asked to combine their writing with other, quite different kinds of work, and are often too busy to stop and think about the best ways to get their message out.

Renew, Refresh and Retool is an inexpensive, half-day workshop that directly addresses the needs of small business and not-for-profit staff writers. Jane Sherwin, owner of WordDrive Communications and a Boston-based writer for business, healthcare and education, will provide these writers with support and new skills in her workshop on Thursday, December 10.

Sherwin says that, while small business writers may be skilled at putting words on paper, they do not always have the time to think through the audiences they are writing for, or the strengths of their organization that they want to convey. They may also experience the stress that comes from being asked to write while at the same time being distracted by quite different tasks that are managerial in nature.

“I’ve designed Renew, Refresh and Retool,” says Sherwin, “as a way for staff who do the writing to get the support they need. They’ll have the chance to stop, catch their breath, and step back to take a look at the best ways to do their work. We’ll start with some exercises to help them clarify who their audiences are, since understanding your audience is essential to good writing. Participants will also have a chance to get clear about their organization’s strengths-it’s important to take a little time to make sure you understand what you want to convey.”

Sherwin says the workshop will also highlight some of the most important rules for effective writing, and include some tools for getting started when the writer faces a blank page and is distracted by the other demands of the job. “When you’re back on the job, you’ll have the renewed strengths and skills to get your message out effectively.”

Renew, Refresh, and Retool happens Thursday, December 10, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. To learn more and to register:
