California personal injury attorneys alert- A fatal patrol car and bicycle crash left a 63-year-old man dead. San Diego, CAA deadly collision in University City resulted in the death of a 63-year-old man after he pulled into the path of a patrol car while riding his bicycle. The fatal collision occurred on Genesee Avenue near Governor Drive around 7:15 a.m., on Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The San Diego police officials stated Walter Nichols Freeman, 63, of San Diego, pulled out of a gas station parking lot on his bicycle and headed south in the bike lane. Freeman then tried to cross a lane and crashed into the oncoming patrol car. The Northern Division patrol car was reportedly responding to another accident, and traveling under the posted speed limit of 45 mph when the crash occurred. The light and sirens were not activated prior to the crash. The police officer has been with the Police Department for 18 months, and is currently on paid administrative leave until the investigation is finished. He did not sustain any injuries in the wreck. Debris were scattered across the heavily trafficked roadway, and the windshield of the police vehicle was shattered. Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical services (EMS) teams. He was reportedly wearing a bike helmet and a vest with reflective patches.
