CHICAGO, IL, November 18, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ — Allergies come in all forms. Environmental allergies to pollen and mold; allergies triggered by animals, food, and even detergents. Among all the allergies, though, allergies to things used in medical professions can cause the most damage. Allergies to common things in dental offices can be cause enough to keep you away from the dentist’s office, and this can lead to poor oral health.
Common Dental Allergies
People have allergic reactions to all sorts of things. In the dentist office, you may find allergens like:
- Latex and rubber used in gloves and various dental instruments
- Balsam of Peru, Methacrylates, and Eugenol used during root canals and in some dental cements
- Nickel, gold, and mercury, used in some dental fillings
- Various pain relieving, and anesthetic medications
When looking for a dentist, it is important to provide them with a list of your allergies. Most dentists will work with you to ensure nothing during your treatment will cause an adverse reaction.
Alternatives
Latex allergies are so common, that most medical professionals no longer use latex gloves. New synthetics provide an equal amount of protection for both you and your dentist without triggering a potential allergic reaction.
Porcelain and resin fillings and bonding agents are readily available in many dental offices. This eliminates the potential for an allergic reaction while providing a more structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing filling. In addition to being a potential allergen, metal fillings expand and contract with temperature changes within the mouth. This can eventually cause them to fall out, often taking part of the tooth with them, and leading to more dental work being required.
Allergies to medications and chemicals common in dental offices can be avoided by giving your dentist a list of your allergens. This will allow your dentist to tailor a solution to your particular needs, while still allowing them to provide you with necessary dental procedures.
