Do you remember Notion Ink.. The company behind Adam tablet which was supposedly going to give a tough fight to Apple iPad?
If you don’t, that’s completely fine. The first generation Adam came out to much fanfare, but was crippled with flaws and failed miserably in the end. The company has been completely silent for nearly 2 years now. However, it seems that they are back with the next generation Adam II, and barring an innovative dual screen, it seems to be yet another mid-range generic tablet that may appeal to masses due to its pricing!
Adam II Specifications
Adam II is a 1.5 Ghz Dual core tablet with 10.1 inch IPS screen with a decent resolution of 1280X800 pixels. It sports a 2 MP front and back camera and has 1 GB DDR3 ram. Highlight of this tablet is its 2nd screen which basically offers notification window even when the tablet is in sleep mode. Another excellent feature is its 6000 mAh battery that offers over 10 hours of entertainment without recharge.
Interestingly, Adam II can be termed as a Indian Government project, as it has been funded by Technology Development Board (Department of Science & Technology).
Adam II was unveiled at National Technology Awards 2013 – Here is an excerpt from the official press release.
The fourth item launched is a modular Tablet PC designed, developed and manufactured by two young IITians- Sh. Rohan Pandey and Sh. Rohit Rathi. Their Tablet PC is differentiated from other similar product in the market as it integrates ZigBee along with WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G. Its design is inspired from the look of a book and it has 2 displays, one in front like a Magazine and another on the spine to show secondary information. This advanced version is intended to be marketed at a price of Rs. 12,000/- per unit in the Indian market.
Adam II , a Govt. project, not a Notion Ink Product?
Here is a screenshot of the leaflet, which clearly mentions that Adam II is funded by Government
What I find intriguing is that there is no mention of Notion Ink anywhere.
[box type=”info” ]In most cases, when a particular project is funded (or given grants) by the Government, the IP (intellectual property) of the project remains with the Government and it is mandatory to be sold in India only.[/box]
Given that the leaflet does not mention Notion Ink anywhere – Does it mean, Adam II will be available in India only?
Also, the price announced for Adam II is 12000/-, which, given the specs of the tablet is extremely good. I am not sure if that price is feasible, if it was to be made commercially available across the world.
In my view, Adam II is not a Notion Ink product, but a Government funded project done by two IITians Rohan Pandey and Rohit Rathi. It could be termed as something similar to Aakash Tablet project (which is also been developed by IIT).
