Amazon Launches Online Art Marketplace: Will It Come to India?

Amazon has opened up yet another channel for sales – This time it is an Art Marketplace, which offers buyers access to more than 40,000 pieces of fine art from over 150 galleries. Currently, Amazon Art has artworks from over 4,500 artists.

Amazon claims that this marketplace is one of the largest collections of original and limited edition artworks from many famous art galleries in the US & UK.

Amazon Art

Even if you are not an art enthusiast, a single look at the Amazon Art catalogue will tell you the amazing quality of works that is present in the marketplace. Some of paintings available have a price-tag of close to USD 5 million. Some of original paintings available are about 75 years old [like this one].

While many art galleries across the world, especially US and UK put up the artworks online for sale, Amazon Art aims to bring all these paintings on a single platform, enabling the art connoisseurs and buyers a large selection in one single place.

While Amazon Art lists many high-end artworks, there are thousands of original paintings and prints which can be bought for few hundred dollars as well. Infact, some artworks / prints are available for as low as 30 USD.

Will Amazon Art Come to India

I am sure this question has immediately crossed your mind. The press release does not specify anything other than that current artworks are from galleries in the US, UK, Netherlands and Canada. But there is a definite possibility that probably a year down the line, Amazon India may create a same marketplace here in India showing artworks from Indian galleries.

And yes, as you may have guessed, Indian buyers cannot buy artworks directly from Amazon Art unless you use some not-so-straightforward means!
