by Viral Dholakia
Ratan Tata

This is by far the largest gift ever from a non-US donor to this prestigious school. The very next moment this unusual thought struck me, “Harvard ko Rs.220 [...]

2008 is a year Tata’s would like to remember

by Sriram Vadlamani

The media went berserk after the Mumbai attacks. Taj Mahal hotel was under siege for 60 hours by a handful of gunmen. That had hampered the reputation and induced fear in tourist’s mind. Would the business and atmosphere at Taj be the same again? Adding to this was the Tata Nano fiasco in West Bengal.

Tata Nano, the car the world is waiting for, hit a roadblock in 2008. West Bengal government has granted 1000 acre land to Tata Motors for building the plant. Tata Nano business model is a lean model. It has invited its suppliers to build their shops around the main factory so that the cost of logistics would be trimmed down. Ratan_d_tata That would put the final price of the car at 1 lakh. Mamatha Banerjee had other ideas. She did not get the whole supply chain thing for whatever reasons. So, she picked up few farmers and went on strike at the Tata plant. Tata has to return 400 acres to the farmers. Since the factory was almost built, Tata cannot absorb losses and go back. So it is win-win situation as per Ms.Banerjee. Can we blame her? That is what is happening in India so far.

Nano fiasco along with the Taj incident made 2008 a forgettable year for Tata. But, Is it really? What if I were to say : 2008 is a year Tata’s would like to remember. In fact, whole of India Inc would remember 2008.

Why exactly?

Poll Results – When and at what price will Tata Launch?

by Arun Prabhudesai

Few days back I had launched a poll asking readers – At what price will Tata Nano be available in the market. Here are the results of that poll.

[poll=8]

This poll garnered very good response with over 1000 respondents participating.

Majority of the respondents do not feel that Tata nano will come at a promised price of 1 Lakh rupee – given that Indian inflation figures are continuously into double digits, raw material prices may have close to doubled, since Ratan Tata announced the launch of the car early in January this year.

However, I am surprised that 22% still feel that Tata Nano will be available at 1 Lakh rupee. Although I respect their optimism, I am sure their hopes will be shattered same way it happened with pricing hype of Iphone before launch.

Will the Nano come out on time and at what price?

by Arun Prabhudesai
Tata Nano car

The world is eagerly waiting to see when, how and at what price Tata Nano is going to get launched. Most of the people I have spoken to and most of the articles I have read are very very skeptical about Tata Nano’s arrival– A One lakh rupees ($2500) people’s car.

Even though Ratan Tata had gone ahead and announced that he will keep his promise on Tata Nano earlier this year in Auto Expo, most Automakers across the globe are still not convinced.

The Tata Nano is supposed to hit the roads by end of this year, but with problems faced for setting up Tata Nano production plant at Singur in West Bengal, it seems quite unlikely !
