by rabigupta
confusion-2

Yes, both these words share common initials, but in reality there is huge gap between India and Innovation. In past decade India has become a hub for outsourcing (specially in IT), and has shown some outstanding growth in fields like Telecom. But this post is specially for Internet Startups where all the action is happening [...]

Speeding up the web-2: site speed and why hosting in India becomes a no-no henceforth

by Sandy

Google is apparently quite keen on making the web faster. First there was the announcement of SPDY protocol and now there is some talk about how the underlying algorithm of Google has been changed, under the hood,  in caffeine, to bring you faster and better search results.

Google’s Matt Cutts recently gave an interview to Mike of [...]

Shaadi.com -The most visited matrimonial site in the world…really?

by Arun Prabhudesai
shaadi false

I was reading a piece on Shaadi and Vodafone tie-up to offer Matrimony services on mobile. While on the Shaadi.com site, I found a surprising headline on the homepage declaring “Ranked as the most visited matrimonial website in the world”, which really intrigued me.

shaadi false

I would not have been surprised if it was in India, but to be the most visited matrimonial site was a little un-believable. However, once I clicked and found out more details, it was no surprise – Shaadi.com twisted the headline to misguide in the visitors !

Top 15 Web properties in India

Comscore today released statistics for top web properties in India for the month of May 08. The numbers throw up some interesting facts. For one, Google has overtaken the Numero Uno position from Yahoo that it had held since the start. Last year they were neck to neck with roughly 14.5 monthly pageviews (Yahoo slightly higher ), however Google sites saw a growth of 35% as against Yahoo’s 27% notching the top position.

It grew on the strength of several Google-owned entities, including Google Search (up 38 percent to 17.1 million visitors), social networking site Orkut (up 39 percent to 9.3 million visitors), blog platform Blogger.com (up 102 percent to 7.3 million visitors), and video site YouTube (up 131 percent to 6.3 million visitors).

The top 3 slots go to Google, Yahoo and Microsoft respectively. Rediff comes at respectable 4th place with a rise of nearly 19% over last year. The surprise inclusion was of AOL sites at 5th spot, who were not even present a year back. The AOL mail seemed to have been quite a hit with Indian audience and number of them are adopting AOL mail over Yahoo and Gmail.

Advertisement India: Online classifieds for offline world

by Arun Prabhudesai
Indian advertisement

In this web2.0 age we are increasingly getting used to online classified sites, however, even in today’s world, offline newspaper classifieds have more than 90% of the market share. Online ads do not generate even fraction of a response comparatively.

Here is an example, I was looking for a office for my startup here in Pune. I did post online classified ad in no less than 5 different portals. The only site that gave me couple of responses was Kijiji. Other than that, I did not receive a single response.

For lack of options, I decided to give a newspaper classified ad for my rental office requirement. Although finding the nearest place that accepts newspaper classified was a big pain, I did finally manage to get my ad published in a well circulated daily in Pune.

It sure was worth it. On the day ad appeared, I had no less than 25 responses and more options to choose from, than I needed. Essentially, three hundred rupees spent on newspaper classified was well worth it.

Today, I came across a very useful site, which could have saved me the time and effort of running around to get my classified ad published.

What do bloggers do online?

by Arun Prabhudesai
highest category engagement heavy bloggers

The recent ComScore study throws up some interesting facts about blogger’s web consumption. As majority of  bloggers are from US and UK, the survey shows their browsing preferences and amount of time they spend on which kind of sites.

Technorati tracks more than 115 million blogs and they are growing. Infact, blogs outnumber traditional websites.

Heavy Bloggers are Heavy Consumers of News and Entertainment Content

For purposes of this study, heavy bloggers are defined as the heaviest 20 percent of blog visitors who account for 84 percent of all the time spent on blogging sites.Given that blogs can often be described as both informative and entertaining, it is not surprising that heavy users of blog sites are more likely than the average Internet user to consume news and entertainment content online. They are significantly more likely to consume content at politics and general news sites, and also consume a disproportionate amount of content on entertainment news, humor, movies and photo-sharing sites.

Addictive e-parody!

by Arun Prabhudesai
Uncyclopedia - Encylopedia spoof

In continuation to the funny look of Microsoft Search Engine – MSDewey.com , Uncyclopedia.org is another site that has got into notice. The site looks to be a spoof of the well-contented, encyclopedia Wikepedia.org. Try opening these sites together and every word, link and tag lines of the former site seems to be a mockery of the latter.

Microsoft Dewey Search Engine

For some of us who have not viewed the new animated version of search engine of Microsoft, here it is – MSDewey. The Website is far behind when compared to Google/Yahoo in terms of its speed, content and user friendliness but it definitely is an eye catcher to a new visitor who will experience the hilarious scene of the actress.

India is rapidly going online. Even though less than 10% of all Indian online users (which number in itself is quite low) have actually shopped online, a lot of new entrants are making a foray into online market, banking on the growth of internet penetration in India.

How will Indian local search startups tackle Google India Initiatives?

by Arun Prabhudesai
Local India Search

Google, with this announcement have created a big competition for Indian local search start-ups. My initial impressions of there Google local search was pretty good, but they will go from good to excellent in no time with the kind of backing and experience they have. Local Google search in US is unmatched even with competition from biggies like yahoo and live.
