Google Apps Vault now in India: Google’s latest app for Businesses

Google has announced the launch of Vault for Google Apps in India. Vault is an app that is a one-stop solution for storing critical business data including emails, conversations, chat messages and more. It has enhanced archiving capabilities and Google claims that an app like this can save thousands of dollars in case of litigation that involves electronic discovery (e-discovery).

Unlike most of the other Google services, Vault is not a free service. It is an optional Google app that will cost users $5 per month. No other investment in terms of architecture/e-storage is required on the part of the user as Vault functions on a totally web based architecture.

With Vault, Google aims to make e-governance easier. Business owners and managers of companies who are already functioning in the Google environment can purchase Vault to store, archive and retrieve critical business data.

They will also be able to set specific data retention policies which can be applied to all or few users. Once such policies are in place, Vault will retain email, chat messages and other electronic conversations even if they are deliberately or inadvertently deleted.

As a real life example, "boy that Timberwolf was one shitty deal" were the words that landed Goldman Sachs in one of the biggest soups during the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis. Bosses and business owners will be able to use Vault to keep a tab on the archived messages and reprimand employees who indulge into inappropriate conversations. ‘Holds’ can also be placed over users. Holds are types of restrictions that may bar users from deleting their emails or chat messages.

Vault by Google Apps also aims to make e-discovery easier. For the uninitiated, e-discovery is the discovery or retrieval of information held in electronic format. The process is primarily done to aid legal proceedings, investigative procedures and audits. Administrators will have access to a dashboard where they can collect, organize, view and retrieve all relevant documents to a specific case and take a well informed decision after proper assessment.

In case of legal action, Vault allows easy retrieval and export of generic and specific email/conversations in a standard format which can be used for further review.

These exports can be critical in the analyses of a case during litigation or even during audit procedures. "And most of those documents these days are in electronic form" says Kent Walker, Senior VP & General Counsel at Google, while talking about record management practices and the time a company is being sued or faces the possibility of being sued.

But why should a business owner in India buy the Vault app? Is such an articulate record management practice really worth having in India?

The answer is a YES.

India Inc woke up to the digital age long time back and organizations including the government have put into place the use of electronic data in many areas. A record management system like the Vault can allow for the organization and retrieval of conversations that may hold the key to a dispute.

Such communication could very well be used in the court of law or even to resolve petty arguments with the auditors. Reliance on electronic means for day to day functioning of businesses in India is increasing.

Data management/recovery tools like the Vault could very well be the app that saved a business in case of litigation which calls for exhaustive e-discovery.

In which case, the $5/month fee would seem like the best investment ever made.

Cleartrip redesigns user dashboard, and its awesome!

I have been a big fan of Cleartrip for past couple of years. It has been my de-facto site for searching and booking Plane and Train tickets. One of the main reasons I like cleartrip was its excellent UI experience. It is simple, fast and intuitive. It was/is by far one of the best and did not really need any tinkering.

However, I was in for a surprise today morning when I logged in to print tickets for one of my future journeys. They made their already excellent UI even better. The UI is much more faster and simpler. They seem to have adopted the Google’esque approach to design. And, it is now more social as well!

[Note: Cleartrip homepage is still the same, but the dashboard has been redesigned]

What I really like about this UI, is that it is supremely fast. Cleartrip has used latest technologies like AJAX and ensured minimum page loads for users. The “trips” page list down the past and future trips beautifully and what’s more, it can very easily be linked with your Google Calendar (This is going to be a blessing for regular travelers).

The new dashboard is definitely more social, where one can connect their Facebook account and import their profile details. Cleartrip is now storing profiles of users separately and users account will show up profiles of all the travelers for whom the tickets have been booked earlier through that account.

Cleartrip’s new “Expressway” feature is designed to minimize users effort as it securely stores the credit card / transaction data so that users do not have to enter it repeatedly (this one feature I really longed for..). Apart from all these features, users now have capability to set their preferred transaction currency.

Overall, I think cleartrip has raised the bar even further – and users are sure to like the new redesign. Well done Cleartrip Team!

Megaupload shut down by US FBI/Justice Dept., Anonymous retaliates!

Update: Looks like a new site has cropped up and has exact look & feel of Megaupload, but does not have a domain name… just the IP address – http://109.236.83.66/ . Not sure if it is someone from original Megaupload team, or an imitator… But it did not take much time…did it!

Hugely popular file sharing site – Megaupload.com – is dead. It was bought down by US FBI yesterday after a Grand Jury in Eastern District of Virginia charged the Megaupload owners of racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement.

This action by FBI is among the largest copyright infringement cases in the world which has purportedly cost more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners.

Megaupload.com is a hugely popular file sharing site in India and across the globe having more than a billion visits to the site, more than 150 million registered users, 50 million daily visitors and accounting for four percent of the total traffic on the Internet.

Hong Kong & New Zealand based owner, Kim Schmitz, along with 7 other employees of Megaupload are charged & arrested in the indictment released by US Justice Department.

According to a Venturebeat article, Megaupload came into limelight due to a recent release of a music video where Megaupload CEO Swiss Beatz got some very popular singers to participate and popularize its service. See the following video.

Hacker Group Anonymous Retaliates with Largest Ever Attack

With Department of Justice bringing down Megaupload site, hacker group “anonymous” launched biggest ever attack bringing down sites of Department of Justice, FBI, Universal Music Group, RIAA & several others.

My personal point of view is that Megaupload should not be held responsible, as they are just the platform offering file upload services. They have laid down proper terms and conditions [cached link] where in point number 7.4 they clearly state the following:

Megaupload Services may be used only for lawful purposes. Transmission, distribution or storage of any material in violation of any applicable law or regulation, including export control laws, is prohibited. This includes, without limitation, material protected by patent, copyright, trademark, service mark, trade secret or other intellectual property rights. If you use another party’s material, you must obtain prior authorization

Megaupload has taken utmost care to inform users what is allowed and what is not allowed to be uploaded on the site and if the users choose to upload copyright infringing material, they cannot be held responsible for it!

This action has set a dangerous precedence, and I wonder what the US Government plans to do with other similar sites like MediaFire, YouSendIt and Rapidshare, who provide similar kind of file-sharing services. As of now Megaupload & all their umbrella sites are down and I doubt you will see them live again ever… R.I.P Megaupload!

Additionally, if acts like SOPA & PIPA are passed, actions like these will become commonplace and will ruin the internet freedom!

Your genuine followers will feel betrayed and never trust you again. There isn’t much potential for signing a contract with each individual follower to post only positive comments right?

Buy the target audience you want

One big advantage of buying Facebook and Twitter following though, is that businesses can select the range and profile of the type of fans and followers they want. For instance, if you have a beauty product to sell, you could specifically buy American women fans in the age group of 25-40 and so on (yes, there are services that give you that).

On the other hand, if you solely depend on building genuine traffic, you would probably take a long time to build up a following of potential customers and a target audience of the exact diversity and category that you would hope for.

It may sound like we’re sitting on the fence here, but it’s really a matter of every business’ ethics and policy to bulk buy followers on social media or not. Building genuine fans and followers who can regularly interact with your brand and actually consume your marketing communication sounds like a much better idea to us.
