Instablogs global report: Citizen Journalism with Videos

by Arun Prabhudesai

I first met Ankit (CEO of Instablogs) at proto.in early this year. I have been following Instablogs closely since. One of the biggest positives that I see with them is that they have managed to create a vibrant loyal community through-out the world. Probably one of the most important factors of success for a startup.

Now that Instablogs is on its way to become a success, they recently launched “Instablogs Ground Report” or a video site for citizen journalism.

I sat with Ankit and his team (offcourse virtually) to find out more about Instablogs Ground Report.

Arun: Instablogs has done quite well with citizen journalism with your site getting around 3 million hits and growing, what prompted you to get into "video citizen journalism" with instablogs tv

Prince Campbell: Not everyone has the time or inclination to read all the great stuff written here. That is why we decided to highlight certain stories and opinions in a short daily video show you can watch anytime. Everyday will be actual stories from you and people like you from all over the world. We do not hate mainstream media. And this show is not designed to replace your regular reading and watching of the news.

by Arun Prabhudesai
buzzartv logo

Last November I had written about Indibiz.tv, which was an online directory for brands showcasing their ad commercials on the net. Now, Pixelkraft Media solutions, company behind indibiz have launched another site – Buzzar.tv – which is again very similar to what indibiz.tv is offering.

Here is how Pixelkraft differentiates Buzzar from Indibiz:

myPOPKORN.com – Videos that cannot be seen !

by Arun Prabhudesai
mypopkorn

Thanks to bad broadband connections in India, watching streaming videos on the net can be one of the most frustrating things. But most of us beat the problem by pausing the video and seeing it after it is fully buffered.

But how about a video site that presents with you hundreds of videos but they can never be streamed. Introducing myPOPKORN.com, a video site that launched recently and promises you lot of video goodies but never delivers anything.

mypopkorn

MyPopkorn.com is owned by Digital Media Convergence Ltd (DMCL), a part of the Essel Group, which also owns Zee Turner Ltd and DishTV. It is a website which showcases three minute videos of soap operas and other TV shows, news and movie clips.

The idea and concept behind the site is actually quite good. If you have missed any of the Soap Operas or want to watch the latest news headlines it (supposedly) brings to you the content in condensed format enough for you to get the gist of the whole thing.

Youtube India! What should you expect from it?

by Arun Prabhudesai
image

ContentSutra has just reported that YouTube is planning to launch an India site on the 7th of May. Although, the news does not seem to be formally confirmed, there are strong chances that it might be true. Youtube had bought out (through dispute resolution) youtube.in domain from one Mr. Rohit Kohli who had registered the domain.

Currently, youtube.in has a blank page, but what makes me believe this news is that even a blank page is showing youtube favicon.

Last year, youtube launched 9 country specific sites – Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Ireland and they currently have around 18 country specific sites.

by Arun Prabhudesai
Virgin Mobile Australia Pty Ltd

Image from WikipediaI have said this repeatedly earlier and I am saying it again. I love Indian TV advertisements. They not only pass across the message in those limited 10 seconds, but the fun element in it keeps the viewers wanting for more.

The 2 recent addtions to my favorite list are 2 maiden ads released by Virgin [...]

The new era of mobile content broadcasting and distribution

by Arun Prabhudesai
Indian Mobile Internet television

It is amazing to see how television broadcasting has changed over past 10-15 years. Earlier, we used to watch anything that was dished out to us on Doordarshan, be it Nukkad, be it films division cartoons (do you remember those?) or Sunday serials and bland evening movies. And today, even with 100 channels beaming on our TV sets, we crib about lack of choices. And to fulfill this demand (do we really need more channels?) there are hundreds of new channels slated to be launched.

Broadband in India: Is it going to ever improve?

by Arun Prabhudesai

One of the major problems that I face during my travel to India is the speed and reliability of broadband connections. In US, majority of users have 4 to 6 mbps lines at their home and reliability problems are next to none. Downloading a gigabyte files or watching a movie online is never a problem.

If you are a regular reader of this blog you know my love Indian advertisements. Yes, they can get on your nerves sometimes, especially during cricket matches, but at the same time, some ads just amaze you with their creativity and presentation.

Sunday fun: It can happen only in India

by Arun Prabhudesai

Indian roads are legendary and Traffic on it, even bigger. It is a shock for any foreign national traveling. They are always amazed at how does Indian traffic system work.

But it sure works ! Best way to describe the traffic would be “Organized Chaos”

Now, this video goes one step further. Have a look at these daredevils (aka foolish people) doing stunts on a busy delhi highway overflowing with traffic.
