Indian Union Budget 2009: Highlights & Report

by Arun Prabhudesai
Pranab-Indian-union-budget

The much hyped and highly anticipated Indian Union Budget is finally out in open. The Stock Markets have not taken too kindly to Pranab Mukherjee’s Budget and saw one of the biggest falls on a Budget day – 870 points to be precise.

This time around Government had a great chance of announcing a reformist budget that would put India on serious growth path, as there were no left parties trying to hold them at ransom for every liberal decision they made. but alas…

If you had to explain the budget in one line, what would you say?

I’d call it:

A pro rural budget catering to masses but without clear reformist path

Now that is my personal judgment, and some may agree with it but some may not.

Biometric PAN cards: Is Mr. Chidambaram too ambitious ?

by Arun Prabhudesai

I am not saying that they will not be implemented soon, but after implementation to actual utilization may take a long long time. Think about just one issue: Every Govt. office will need a gadget to identify the BIOMETRIC PAN cards- not only Government offices, but every banker and Institution where PAN card is required. The other issue is that a person will have to travel to offices everytime for his identification. One will not be able to post his application like he does now. Now thats a real pain. There are host of other problems that need to be tackled and thought about. Can these issues be overcome in matter of months ?
